Home Safety

Updating Your Home

Here’s a practical senior-proofing checklist for your home. Ideally, these updates are made before you need them. Too often people wait for a fall or injury to highlight the need. Let’s avoid that.

Senior Proofing Checklist

Bathroom Safety

Highest Priority Area

  • Grab bars in the bathroom, especially near the toilet and in the shower
  • Walk-in shower with a low or no threshold entry
  • Handheld shower head
  • Shower chair or built-in shower seat
  • Raised toilet seat
  • Non-slip flooring in bathrooms

Fall Prevention & Mobility

  • Remove loose rugs and secure all area rugs firmly
  • Add stair treads or non-slip strips
  • Ensure sturdy handrails on both sides of stairs
  • Create a step-free entry or add a ramp if needed
  • Widen doorways for walkers or wheelchairs
  • Clear walkways of clutter, cords, and small obstacles

Entry & Flooring Safety

  • Ensure non-slip flooring in key areas (bathrooms, entryways, high-traffic zones)
  • Address slippery surfaces throughout the home

Lighting & Visibility

  • Improve lighting throughout the home, especially halls, stairs, and bathrooms
  • Add nightlights in bedrooms, hallways, and bathrooms

Accessibility & Ease of Use

  • Install lever-style door handles instead of round knobs
  • Lower or adjust shelves and storage to reduce reaching and bending
  • Place frequently used items within easy reach

Living Area Safety & Comfort

  • Use chairs and sofas with firm seats and armrests for easier standing
  • Secure loose cords along walls or behind furniture

Emergency Preparedness

  • Ensure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working
  • Consider a medical alert system or emergency call device
